The Use of Letters in a Job Search
(via snail mail, email or fax)
I The Unpublished or Hidden Job Sector
* In Networking (A resume is not used in any of these
unless indicated)
-
Introduction prior to phone call for an appointment
-
"Thank you" note following meeting.
-
Progress report to someone who has given you referrals
* Target Marketing Letter (No resume)
This is a cold call to a potential hiring manager to get their
attention and create some interest in you, so that a follow up phone call will
be answered and an exploratory interview can be arranged.
* Broadcast Marketing Letter (Possibly send resume)
This is the same as above except that is is not followed up by a
phone call., It is very low productivity and not recommended.
II Published Job Sectors
-
Search Firms (Must send resume with statement of more recent
cash compensation)
-
Answering Want Ads (Resume is usually requested)
-
Following job interviews (Organization already has resume)
-
To keep a job opprotunity alive, if extended period between
interviews.
-
To accept or turn down an offer.
-
To notify and than your network for their support after you
have bene in a new job for several weeks.
-
Note: You can not go wrong sending any of these by snail
mail. I'd use a fax as a last choice, because it is public, but is
acceptable if someone requests it. Email can be useful if there is a
time issue or in keeping a pending offer alive.
